A Taste of Spanish

Ever wanted to wrap your tongue – and your taste buds – around the Spanish language? This lunchtime course provides an introduction to Spanish for absolute beginners and lets you sample a traditional tapa each week from a Spanish-speaking country.

With a focus on food, this is a great course for anyone wanting to learn Spanish for travel.

Target audience:
This course is for beginners wishing to gain an introduction to Spanish and anyone planning to visit a Spanish-speaking country.

Learning objectives:
By the end of the course, you will have learned the linguistic skills to handle (politely and competently) situations such as:

  • introducing yourself
  • being a customer in cafés and restaurants
  • going shopping
  • travelling by bus and train
  • making enquiries
  • visiting places as a tourist
  • staying at hotels.

The course focuses mainly on the present tense, enabling you to say what activities you are (or are going to be) involved in.

Course outline:
This course involves interactive group learning in a social way.

At each session, the presenter will provide a tapa so the group can share a taste of food from Spanish-speaking countries. Because the course is held over lunchtime, you are encouraged to bring your lunch. Tea and coffee are available at the start of each session.

To reinforce your learning, homework is encouraged. There is no formal assessment and all learning materials are provided.

Teresa Neches is an experienced Spanish teacher with a Masters in Applied Linguistics (Second Language Acquisition). She is a native speaker of Spanish.
