Everyday Māori – Level 2

Description

Overview:
Continuing on from Everyday Māori for Beginners this course will further develop your understanding and knowledge of tikanga Māori and te reo Māori in a fun learning environment. You will learn fundamental sentence structures as well as an extensive list of vocabulary and phrases that you will be able to integrate in to everyday life, in both formal and informal settings. You will gain a richer knowledge of tikanga and te reo, and more importantly have confidence in using it!

A course workbook is provided.

Target audience:
This course is aimed at anyone who has completed Everyday Māori for Beginners and for people who have a basic knowledge of te reo Māori that are hoping to improve on their language skills and acquisition.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this course, you will:

  • Be able to confidently present your mihimihi
  • Recite new karakia and waiata
  • Be able to hold a short conversation in all settings and be able to ask and answer questions using the following sentences:
    • Descriptive
    • Possessive
    • Locative
    • Active/Action sentences
  • Acquire a comprehensive list of new vocabulary and proverbs
  • Give a short presentation on your family using a variety of sentence structures
  • Have increased your confidence in using te reo Māori

Course outline:
The course covers the following topics:

Week 1: Whakawhanaunga – Getting aquainted

  • Karakia
  • Whakahua kupu – pronunciation
  • Arotake i ngā mahi – revise course content from Level One
  • Mihimihi

Week 2: I te kāinga – At home

  • Kupu hou
  • Rere āhua – sentences used to describe and classify
  • Whakakahore – negating

Week 3: I te mahi – At work

  • Kupu  hou
  • Pronouns
  • Possessive pronouns
  • Rere noa - Possession using ‘he’
  • Whakakahore – negating

Week 4:  I ngā rā hararei – On holiday

  • Kupu hou
  • I/Kei/Hei – tenses
  • Rere wāhi - Describing the location of something/someone
  • Whakakahore - negating

Week 5: I te toa – At the shops

  • Kupu hou
  • Rere mahi - Action sentences 

Week 6: I te taone – In the city

  • Rere mahi – Action sentences
  • Whakakahore – negating
  • Making a start on our aromatawai

Week 7: Tikanga Māori – Māori customs and protocols

  • Whakaharatau - Revising sentences learnt in the class
  • Preparing for aromatawai
  • Tikanga Māori
  • Waiata

Week 8: Aromatawai

  • Mihimihi
  • Presentation about your whānau
  • Where to from here?

Learning activities focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing te reo Māori. To reinforce your learning homework is encouraged. There is no formal assessment.

There is a short break halfway through each session, and tea and coffee are provided. You are welcome to bring your own refreshments if you wish.

Class limit:
This course is limited to a maximum of 20 participants, so please enrol early.

Teacher:
Jamie Yeates 
(Te Āti Awa; Te Pae o Rangitīkei) has recently completed his Honours degree in Māori Studies after receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Te Reo Māori, Māori Studies and Cultural Anthropology. He has a passion for te reo Māori and Māori culture, and previously tutored the language at Victoria University of Wellington.
